Our Commitment

Sustainable Event Management is not just a fancy buzzword we adopted overnight.

Like a lot of other conscious citizens, we at Pilcrow Communications have always tried to do what’s right – be ethical in our work, treat people with respect, avoid single use plastic and clean up after ourselves. We realized however, that it wasn’t enough. We needed to stop flirting with sustainability and really commit to the cause.

In a world of cut-throat competition, busy work schedules and limited supply chain, it may not seem like a very smart decision, but we know it’s the right one and definitely the most sustainable one.

While most would assume sustainable events to be either boring or expensive, the fact is that they’re more authentic, and connect with the audience in a more meaningful way. Since implementation of sustainable practices means reducing wastage of any sort, the rewards go beyond the feel-great experience to actually working out more cost effective for the client, benefitting communities and leaving a positive legacy.

What does sustainable event management actually mean?

It’s not only about the environment and global warming, it’s not only about fair practices and responsible sourcing. It’s also about financial success and staying viable, so we definitely recommend everyone should try it.

As we embark on this great adventure of implementing sustainable event management practices, we know it won’t be all smooth sailing. We are eager to meet every challenge, learn along the way and constantly improve our process.

Our Commitment to People

We conduct our operations with integrity and with regard for the law. We do not participate in anticompetitive behaviour, bribery or corruption.

We are an equal opportunity employer and create a safe, stress-free, fulfilling and meaningful work environment for our staff.

We support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights and ensure we are not complicit in human rights abuses, including forced, compulsory or child labour.

We maximise the engagement of local producers, suppliers and services to encourage and enhance local economy.

We will include as many underprivileged or marginalised people as possible, either through employment or through access to the event experience.

We aim to leave a lasting impression within the host community, throughout the supply chain and with event attendees through our commitment to sustainability.

Our Commitment to the Planet

We understand that we are temporary custodians for the space or venue we occupy and treat it with respect.

Our planning and activities always include consideration for biodiversity and local ecological protection.

We ensure all products and materials procured are the most sustainable, ethical and responsible options available.

We require best practice methodology from our suppliers in engaging the most energy efficient infrastructure and materials for our event.

We will work to reduce resource consumption (energy, water, natural and non-renewable resources).

We will work to reduce the environmental impacts of purchasing and venue operations (emissions to air, land and water – including toxicity issues).

Reason to Believe

We adhere to industry best practice and ISO 20121 in event management policy.

We commit to sustainability by providing resources to enable it – time, people, money, materials, knowledge to produce and uphold our Sustainability Policy.

All clients, partners, employees and suppliers will be made aware of our Event Sustainability Policy at the time of engagement.

Compliance with the policy is a contractual obligation on behalf of partners, employees and suppliers. Where relevant, they may be required to complete performance measurement reviews and data to assist in determining an events footprint.

We ensure monitoring and timely management reviews of all event sustainability activity, including performance measurement, reporting and planning for continual improvement.

We commit to share learnings and best practices with our industry and stakeholders. Find out more by visiting The SoS Journal.
